Crime scene investigators use the shape of blood droplets to understand details of how crimes were committed. I created a series of simple 3D animations that depict some of the basic mechanisms that determine the droplet shape.
After discussions with Dr Shanan Tobe, I created a simple simulation to illustrate how a blood droplet leaves an elliptical shape when it lands on a surface. In forensic investigations, the ellipse is used to estimate the trajectory of the droplet and may be important in understanding what happened at a crime scene. (A more detailed write-up of blood droplet dynamics.)
Update 08.2018: I heard from Shane that he’s still using my videos in his teaching 🙂 It’s great to know that they’re being put to good use. These videos are free to use as long as you credit me beside the video, as in; “Video by Dr Greg Ruthenbeck”.
